Minecraft updates with first 1.8 snapshot, brings survival and adventure changes

Posted by chooni28 on January 11, 2014 at 8:10 AM Comments comments (0)

Mojang are gearing up to tackle Minecraft's version 1.8. As always, that means the regular unveiling of snapshot updates - giving the development team the chance to pre-test features and look for bugs before they pull the big red update lever. Naturally, as the first step towards 1.8, it's a significant update. For one thing, it adds three new types of stone; For another, it brings some pretty useful changes for both Survival and Adventure modes.

The Mojang blog provides a snapshot rundown, and uses an almost absurd number of exclamation marks to do it. Here's the changes to Survival mode.

"3 new stone types!

"Major Enchanting & Repairing changes!

"Mossy stone bricks recipe!

"Updated Villager trading!

"Doors stack!

"Slime blocks!

"Lots of other tweaks, changes, bug fixes and secret features!"

And! Here's! What's! Happened! To! Adventure! Mode!

"Adventure Mode no longer lets you place/destroy blocks.

"But that can change!

"Added Entity Selectors! Use @e in certain commands to target entities. You can limit it with [type=Chicken] or [type=!Skeleton]

"Added a /blockdata command!

"Added ‘Lock’ (String) NBT tag on most containers.

"Added an optional entity parameter to /kill (try: /kill @e[type=!Player]

"Added optional arguments to /clear for max item count (use 0 to not actually delete anything) & NBT data

"Lots of other tweaks, changes, bug fixes and secret features!"

The "that can change" on the list refers to a tweet made by Jeb. It showed an "Adventure Shovel" that allowed the players to remove specific blocks, as defined by the maker of that map.

You can download the snapshot through the Minecraft launcher, by creating a new profile and selecting the option to "enable experimental development snapshots". Be warned though, as a Snapshot, it will probably have some bugs.

Update: Pre-release 1.7.2 has been released to address some serious crashes, including the inability to start on some Linux computers.

It feels like we’ve been working on this for a year now, with more than half a million lines of code changed over 1,104 commits we’ve been working extremely hard on this update. We’re calling this one “The update that changed the world”, because it really has in two different ways; there’s over twice the amount of ingame biomes, and we’ve overhauled lots of the code preparing for the plugin API.

Here’s a list of cool things that may be coming your way on Friday, if the pre-release goes well!

Multiplayer enhancements!

Servers can now put a 64×64 image called “server-icon.png” in their folder, that you will see on your server list.

Resource pack changes!

You can now have multiple selected.

They can completely re-do your sounds, adding new ones or changing current ones.

Servers can now recommend a resource pack for you to use.

Other planned features, items, and blocks

This page has been suggested to be merged with Unimplemented features as the articles share similar information or a common topic. Discuss

[hide]Feature Description

Transparent Clouds Jeb originally made clouds transparent when looking from underneath it in snapshot 13w06a.[1] However, this change was reverted in 13w10b as Jeb noticed that the fix caused an FPS drop. He stated "In the future we can fix this again, but with more specific cloud options in the video settings menu."[2]

Construction analysis Jeb mentioned that they hoped to add better systems for analyzing constructions, such as village houses — currently a lone door will be considered a village house.[3]

Cauldron Enhancement Dinnerbone plans to make buckets fillable from cauldrons.[4]

Rendering Engine Rewrite First confirmed for 1.5, but not added yet. The features will require a higher OpenGL feature-set and include some sort of fallback for older hardware. The rewritten engine will allow for much faster overall rendering, resulting in higher FPS. This has partially been added in 1.7[5][6]

Audio loops Audio loops have not yet been added to the game, but may be implemented to play when the player is in a specific location (In caves, forests, oceans, and beside a waterfall). This has been partially added in 1.4 with the addition of lava and water ambient sounds.

Friends List The Minecraft documentary team of 2 Player Productions filmed a Keynote roadmap, containing these lines.[7][8] Kristoffer mentioned on Twitter that he is currently working on friends lists for Scrolls, then for other Mojang games. These will be available for players with Mojang accounts. At MineCon 2012 Jeb stated that it would be a large implementation on the server side and will be used for all Mojang games, and that is a big project.[9][10]

Video Support The Minecraft documentary team of 2 Player Productions filmed a Keynote roadmap, containing these lines.[7] It has also been mentioned at various points that a program for making videos will be implemented into Minecraft itself. Minecraft versions 1.7.3 and higher now have built in Twitch support for OS X 10.7 and higher as well as Windows Vista and higher.

Rewriting the Skin System Dinnerbone displayed interest towards looking into switching the skin system to edit right and left player limbs separately, once they're done rewriting the "rendering stuffs".[11]

More Interesting Villagers Jeb mentioned during a Q&A at Minecon 2012 that he would like to expand upon the complexity of Villagers eventually.[12]

More Animals Jon Kagstrom commented on Reddit that he would like to add more animals, such as fish, birds, and tree animals, to make the game seem more alive.[13] Dinnerbone said would like to add pandas,[14] but there are no current plans to add more mobs.[15]

Workbench (Mod/Plugin API)[16]

Main article: Plugin API

Seasons Dinnerbone mentioned on Twitter that he was experimenting with adding seasons, and varying the length of day and night according to season. He also mentioned it during MineCon 2013.[17][18] Seasons may include changes in color of tree leaves and may also be tied to real time.[19][20]

Account System Update[21] This will include the ability to change your Minecraft username and have multiple copies of Minecraft per account. Bans will be changed to use a new Player ID system. This will not be in 1.8

Removing Enchantments Dinnerbone stated that there will be a way to remove enchantments from items.[22]

Beets Ryan Holtz said he wants to add Beets to PC as they are in the Pocket Edition version 0.8.0. Jeb also stated he is testing the texture for them in the PC version.[23][24]

More Ores Dinnerbone said in a Reddit AMA that they planned on adding more ores[25]

More types of caves Dinnerbone said in a Reddit AMA that they planned on adding more types of caves[25]

Easier way to implant terrain changes Dinnerbone said in a Reddit AMA that he planned on making an easier way to implant terrain changes[26]

More structures in biomes Dinnerbone said in a Reddit AMA that he will look into more structures in biomes[26]

[hide] Feature

Description

Transparent Clouds Jeb originally made clouds transparent when looking from underneath it in snapshot 13w06a.[16] However, this change was reverted in 13w10b as Jeb noticed that the fix caused an FPS drop. He stated "In the future we can fix this again, but with more specific cloud options in the video settings menu."[17]

Colliding Clouds Notch said on Reddit that he liked the idea of transforming clouds into blocks and making them collide with buildings, terrain, etc.[18] On Get Satisfaction, a moderator of Mojang spoke with Jeb who said that "The current height regulation is just a temporary fix. Clouds will collide at some point, but not in the upcoming update."[19]

Cauldron Enhancement Dinnerbone plans to make buckets fillable from cauldrons.[20]

Expanding on Enchanted Books Enchanted books will be findable with special enchants normally not obtainable.[21]

Rendering Engine Rewrite First confirmed to 1.5, but not added yet. The features will require a higher OpenGL feature-set and include some sort of fallback for older hardware. The rewritten engine will allow for much faster overall rendering, resulting in more Frames per Second.[22][23]

Indestructible Enchantment Jeb mentioned the possibility to add some kind of Indestructible enchantment to compensate for the loss of negative data values on armor.[24]

Audio loops Audio loops have not yet been added to the game, but may be implemented to play when the player is in a specific location (In caves, forests, oceans, and beside a waterfall). This has been partially added in 1.4 with the addition of lava and water ambient sounds.

New Rail Mojang announced at Minecon 2012 that there would be a new rail to unload mobs and perhaps players when reached. This was supposed to be released in the Redstone Update but was not subsequently included.

Minecart with Dispenser Mojang tweeted images of this during the development of the Redstone Update but did not subsequently release it in the update.[25]

Friends List The Minecraft documentary team of 2 Player Productions filmed a Keynote roadmap, containing these lines.[26][27] Kristoffer mentioned on Twitter that he is currently working on friends lists for Scrolls, then for other Mojang games. These will be available for players with Mojang accounts.[28]

Limited Maps, Video Support The Minecraft documentary team of 2 Player Productions filmed a Keynote roadmap, containing these lines.[29][30]

Rewriting the Skin System Dinnerbone displayed interest towards looking into switching the skin system to edit right and left player limbs separately, once they're done rewriting the "rendering stuffs".[31]

More Interesting Villagers Jeb mentioned during a Q&A at Minecon 2012 that he would like to expand upon the complexity of Villagers eventually.[32]

Red Dragon Notch revealed during the 8th Seecret Friday Update that he would add dragons, one being the Ender Dragon, the other being red tameable dragons.[33] Jeb informed players on his AMA on Reddit that he would add red dragons, but was unsure exactly how.[34]

More Animals Jon Kagstrom commented on Reddit that he would like to add more animals, such as fish, birds, and tree animals, to make the game seem more alive.[35] Later, Jeb stated in a tweet[36] that new mobs are planned for the 1.6 major update. Horses are already confirmed (and added) by Jeb.[37]

Plugin API[38] Main article: Plugin API

Spikes or spike blocks Jeb hinted a possibility of implementing spikes that would work like pistons but push out Spikes. He later considered making a Spike Block that could be pushed by Sticky Pistons instead.[39][40] Dinnerbone showed interest in adding spike blocks after adding tripwire.[41]

More Sea Life During an interview with Jeb, when asked if there will be more “undersea living” like corals or fishes, Jeb stated that "We haven’t planned anything at the moment, but surely there will be *something*"[42]

New Fishing Content Dinnerbone has stated on Twitter that he has plans for new fishing content, stating that fishing isn't fun at the moment.[43]

Seasons Dinnerbone mentioned on Twitter that he was experimenting with adding seasons, and varying the length of day and night according to season.[44][45]
